Her nickname was pronounced "Polly" but spelled "Poly." She eventually changed it because too many people who saw it in writing thought it rhymed with "roly-poly."

This means, of course, that the author of the books eventually changed it. And it's highly plausible that one too many fans came up to Madeleine L'Engle mispronouncing her character's name! We went through *hundreds* of girl names and it was the only one we both liked.

I have to admit I don't actually like the name Jacqueline. I agreed to it as part of a deal to get the boy name to be Jack. We both liked the idea of being able to call her by her name before she was born even though we didn't know the gender, and Jackie works for that. I also picked the middle name, Irene -- the only Greek name John would agree to. (He shot down both Sophia and Aletheia, wisdom and truth. Irene means peace.)

Anyway, I do like the nickname Jackie, though I like it better spelled Jacky because of Jacky Faber, the pirate in the popular YA series. (They are a guilty pleasure of mine.) Also when I type out Jackie on Facebook it tries to tag my MIL. But I'm not sure I should change what I'm doing at this point .... and I don't know what John would say to that, being the one who pushed for the name in the first place. But in my head she's always Jacky. (Like Anne of Green Gables, it matters to me how I spell it in my head.)Sheilahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10853868724554947854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2464977109229359349.post-26006014154530994922017-03-01T09:11:05.293-05:002017-03-01T09:11:05.293-05:00Margaret was one of the final 2 contenders for my ...Margaret was one of the final 2 contenders for my 4mo's name (Sheila and I have very similar tastes!) and I ended up downvoting it because my name also begins with M and I am lazy and like referring to people by their initials. The Sojournerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04559244806125834569noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2464977109229359349.post-53722519847303157292017-03-01T02:25:06.029-05:002017-03-01T02:25:06.029-05:00I know that Marko's and Michael's names ha...I know that Marko's and Michael's names had been picked out even before they were born, but when Miriam also got an M-name, I assumed you wanted everyone to match!

Speaking of all J-names, my family's favorite cleaning lady named all her children that way. But after a while, she realized she didn't want to pick just any J-name for the sake of having a J-name. The first time she worked for us, my grandmother gushed, "You are a jewel!" And she thought, "Jewel? Hmmmm . . ." Guess what her next baby's name was? LOL!

And when I was a child, I knew a family where all the members, not just the children, had R-names. Since the parents were already both R's, I guess they thought it would be cute for the entire family. I really can't imagine doing this, though! The funny thing is, my four younger siblings follow the same pattern: three with the same letter and the fourth with a different one. Though I think in that case they would have done another J-name (to alliterate with their last name) if they had thought of one they liked. Whereas we both kind of liked Margaret but discarded the idea because we didn't want ANOTHER M.Sheilahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10853868724554947854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2464977109229359349.post-61738926119402471982017-02-08T23:20:14.980-05:002017-02-08T23:20:14.980-05:00I never know how to respond to posts like these. Even a truly sincere "I'm glad you're feeling better and that things are lightening up a bit" rings a bit hollow coming from a childless woman!

But yeah, I'm glad you're feeling better and that things are lightening up a bit. LOL!

PS -- I guessed from Facebook where Jackie got her name, but it was a little surprising to this long-time blog reader that Baby #4 didn't have an "M" name!
